Prenatal Ayurvedic Practices

In Ayurveda, the postnatal period is considered a critical time for a mother’s recovery and rejuvenation. A postnatal Ayurvedic diet aims to support the mother’s healing and provide the necessary nutrients for breastfeeding.

In the postnatal period, it’s essential to consume warm and nourishing foods that are easy to digest, like soups, stews, and broths. Cold and raw foods can be challenging to digest.

  1. Use warming spices: Spices such as ginger, cumin, fennel, and cardamom can help improve digestion and boost the immune system. They also help to keep the body warm and improve circulation.

  2. Plenty of liquids: Drinking plenty of warm liquids, such as herbal teas, water, and warm milk, can help keep the body hydrated and support lactation.

  3. Healthy fats: Include healthy fats in the diet, such as ghee, coconut oil, and olive oil. These fats help support brain development in the baby and are important for hormonal balance.

  4. Nourishing soups and stews: Soups and stews made with nutrient-dense ingredients such as lentils, beans, vegetables, and bone broth can provide essential nutrients and help to improve digestion.

  5. Avoid spicy, sour, and fried foods: Spicy, sour, and fried foods can be challenging to digest and can cause inflammation in the body. It’s best to avoid these foods during the postnatal period.

  6. Eat at regular intervals: Eating at regular intervals can help keep blood sugar levels stable and support lactation. Aim to eat three meals a day, with snacks in between if necessary.
