A natural wonder like no other

Lake Atitlán is not your average body of water— it’s a natural wonder. Carved out by volcanic activity over millennia, the lake spans over 50 square miles and plunges to depths of up to 1,000 feet. Its crystalline waters are surrounded by vibrant villages, each with its unique personality, culture, and traditions. The lake herself is the subject of much folklore with alluring blue waters and mystical origins, calling many to the healing shores of this ancient volcanic crater

The mystical vibes of Tzununá

In Tz’utujil (one of the local Mayan dialects) there is no word which equates to ‘leaving’ – that is to say, visitors to Lake Atitlán are always returning home and we certainly feel that way each time we are greeted by the warm eyes and kind hearts of this community. With a rich, colourful and resilient history woven into the tapestry of everyday life (not to mention the amazing tapestries of daily dress) we are honored to be welcomed into the village of Tzununá to share 4 weeks together, living respectfully among this community, the local traditions, and wisdom kept here.

It’s the perfect place to rejuvenate your soul and dive into the ancient teachings of yoga.

Highlights in Lake Atitlán:

1. Yoga and Meditation Retreats: Lake Atitlán is a haven for those seeking inner peace. Numerous centers offer daily yoga and meditation classes, and the serene natural surroundings amplify the experience. Our 200 HR Yoga Teacher Training takes place at the Bambu Guest House (link), an new eco-friendly building designed in accordance with sustainable principles, proving that natural building can be luxurious.

We wake up to an awe inspiring sunrise over Lake Atitlán, as the sleepy Mayan village below comes to life. It is a 10-min walk to lake access and the neighboring town and eclectic travel hub of San Marcos is a 5-minute boat ride from there or 15-minute tuk-tuk (rickshaw).

2. Nourishing Food: Enjoy the natural vegetation and lush surrounds from the yoga platform before nourishing your body with local, organic, vegetarian fare prepared with produce from the Atitlán Organics farm (a 5-minute stroll away). The farm-to-table restaurant is run by three young, local, aspiring chefs named Antonio, Maricela, and Petrona who are as amazing as they are passionate about what they create and we love being guests at their dinner table!

3. Cacao Ceremonies: Dive into the ancient wisdom of cacao during a heart-opening cacao ceremony, often led by local practitioners. As part of every 200 HR Sacred Earth YTT, we participate in a cacao ceremony and traditional Mayan Fire Ceremony run by local women.

4. Holistic Healing: Explore alternative therapies like Reiki, acupuncture, and crystal healing. San Marcos is renowned for its holistic healing offerings. In our training, we will often have different guest teachers share their crafts or weave this in to our evening activity.

Charming villages to explore

As you traverse the lake by boat, you’ll encounter a string of charming villages. Each village, from Santa Cruz to San Pedro, San Juan to Santiago, has its own distinct character and attractions. Explore the local markets, sample traditional Guatemalan cuisine, and immerse yourself in the rich Mayan culture that thrives in these communities.

Beyond its spiritual and cultural richness, Lake Atitlán offers ample opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking, kayaking, and swimming are among the adventures waiting for you.

We have free days woven in to the 200 HR program so you can explore Lake Atitlán and surrounding areas!

As a unique addition, we take a field trip to Quixaya in Guatemala and visit other permaculture farms. This enriching experience connects you with the land and its sustainable practices, deepening your connection to the Earth and your yoga journey.
